That's not a reason to avoid it — engagement rings aren't investment vehicles the way people sometimes imagine — but if resale matters to you, niche aesthetic choices narrow your eventual buyer pool.

The practical filter: unusual should be in the design details, not the structural choices. A ring with an unconventional stone cut, distinctive texture, or non-standard prong arrangement is unique in appearance but as structurally reliable as any standard ring.
