The girdle is the separation plane between the top portion (crown) and the bottom portion (pavilion) of the diamond. Stick to a girdle that is thin - very thick for a cushion cut to ensure the best weight distribution. Having a girdle that is too thin opens up the risk of chipping. Having a girdle that is too thick hides wasted carat weight.

The culet is a facet placed on the bottom of the diamond to help avoid chipping. This can range in size from extremely large (typically found on the old mine and euro cuts) down to very small. Some diamonds don’t have a culet at all. If there is a culet, it will be listed on the diamond grading report along with the size.
