How to Clean Diamond Rings | Rare Carat

Everything collects dirt over time; your shelves, your shoes, and even your diamond ring. You might not notice because your diamond doesn’t look grungy, but, believe me, it's been busy collecting debris. Many daily activities can hide the sparkle of your diamond. Hand lotion, perfume, and natural skin oils are big culprits of dirty engagement rings. Yuck! So, it’s important to know how to clean your jewelry.

What Should I Avoid When Cleaning My Diamond Ring?

Although diamond is the hardest material in the world, it requires careful cleaning. You can clean your engagement ring at home or entrust its cleaning to a specialist.

Ask ten people how to clean a diamond ring and they might give you 10 different answers. Some of these answers could include toothpaste or Windex. Keep in mind, jewelry is delicate and whatever out of the ordinary methods someone proposes to you, it’s your valuable jewelry, so before reaching for any old cleaning solvent, consider the components of your ring. Some easy-to-find cleaning products contain chemicals that can eat away at precious metals or damage accent stones. Some methods of cleaning might work well in the now, but cause problems further down the line.

What Home Products Can I Use To Clean My Diamond Ring or Jewelry?

The truth is, you don’t need harsh chemicals to return the dazzle to even the dirtiest of diamond rings! Simple is often best and that’s especially true for jewelry cleaning. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush with warm soapy water will get the job done. It’s important to use a gentle dish soap, since hand soap often has fragrances or ingredients that are intended to moisturize hands, but will only create an oily film over the gem.

If you decide to bring back your engagement ring’s sparkle with your own hands, at-home jewelry cleaning kits might be your go-to. Pick up a kit for about 10 bucks at the corner store. Although, you might not need to; do you have some gentle dish soap and an old soft toothbrush? Maybe try this!

Here’s what to do to get your diamond ring, back in bling. At home!

Step One: Soak your jewelry in warm water and gentle dish soap for around 20 minutes. Step Two: Use an extra soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean hard to reach areas. Step Three: Repeat steps one and two, until you feel your jewelry is sufficiently clean. Step Four: Rinse with clean water. Step Five: Use a clean, dry, soft cloth, to buff the jewelry until it’s dry and sparkling!

Et Voila! Your ring is looking as shiny as the day of your engagement.

How is Jewelry Cleaned By A Professional Jeweler?

If you choose to entrust that cleaning to a jewelry specialist like we mentioned earlier, jewelers have their own resources for deep cleaning jewelry. A professional steam cleaner can loosen dirt and grime from hard-to-reach places. The piece is then placed in the ultrasonic cleaner to remove any remaining gunk (gunk is a very technical jeweler’s term).

An ultrasonic cleaner uses sound to vibrate the cleaning solution the piece of jewelry is suspended within. Once completed, your jewelry will come out as clean as a whistle! However, if the jeweler doesn’t notice an accent stone is loose from its mounting or the center stone has a loose prong, it can be jiggled out. So be sure to have them check it first!

Armed with this knowledge, I hope you bring back the twinkle to not only your rings, but your necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, as well. Be sure to check out more content on our blog page https://www.rarecarat.com/blog for other diamond and jewelry tips and tricks.
